Foreign Minister Steinmeier condemns terrorist attack in Dhaka
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier gave the following statement in Berlin today (2 July) on the terrorist attack in Dhaka:
Zusatzinformationen
This is another extremely brutal attack by unscrupulous terrorists which has claimed many lives. I condemn this horrific attack in the strongest possible terms.
We share the grief of those who have lost loved ones. At this sorrowful time, my thoughts are with the people of Bangladesh, with our Italian, Japanese and Indian friends, and with all those feeling the truly terrible effects of this attack.
The full details of the incident have yet to emerge. What we know so far seems to indicate that the attack was directed specifically against foreigners meeting in a popular Dhaka restaurant. Should this prove to be the case, it would be yet more evidence of the perverse logic of terrorists trying to split whole societies and destroy the peaceful coexistence of people of diverse origins and religions by means of murder and violence.
The attack in Dhaka demonstrates once again that Islamist terrorism is a global threat and that the community of nations needs to stand together to fight it. Only the joint efforts and persistence of the international community will, step by step, drive back Islamist terrorism and its ruthless ideology.
