The result of the referendum on the peace agreement in Colombia comes as a nasty shock and a huge disappointment. It is a disappointment not only for those who worked for years to end the conflict, but also and above all for the many families on both sides who have lost their sons and daughters in the tens of thousands.

All those bearing political responsibility now owe it to the victims and their families to ensure that the newly awakened hope of peace will not be trampled underfoot. The violence, murder and killing must not be allowed to start all over again.

President Santos and the FARC negotiators must hold fast to their desire for peace. The referendum has been lost – but I still hope that the peace can be won.
