Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the US-Russian negotiations on Syria in Geneva
Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (10 September 2016) on the US-Russian negotiations on Syria in Geneva:
Zusatzinformationen
I am glad that John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov came to an agreement on a ceasefire and military cooperation late last night, following long and difficult negotiations. This was quite a feat, due to the differing interests that had to be reconciled, but also because the situation in Syria is so extraordinarily complicated and tortuous. Now rapid implementation is the key. I call on all parties to the conflict, in Syria and in the region, to comply with the terms agreed by the US and Russia and to suspend hostilities on Monday at the latest. If the ceasefire can be implemented nationwide, it will constitute a genuine, new chance to gain humanitarian access to hundreds of thousands of people in need, as is so desperately required. And it will pave the way for the continuation of the UN-mediated negotiations on a political solution in Geneva.
