Opening event at the meeting of the International Contact Group on Afghanistan in Berlin

Opening event at the meeting of the International Contact Group on Afghanistan in Berlin

On Wednesday, 3 February, representatives from more than 60 countries and international organisations will be coming together at the Federal Foreign Office for a meeting of the International Contact Group (ICG), in which Germany holds the chair.

The conference is taking place at the start of a year during which key decisions will be made in relation to Afghanistan, namely at the NATO summit in Warsaw (July) and the Afghanistan Conference in Brussels (October). The purpose of this ICG meeting in Berlin is, among other things, to reaffirm international support for Afghanistan and to discuss the progress the Afghan Government has made in carrying out reform. Strategies to further the internal peace process in Afghanistan, as well as migration from Afghanistan will also be on the agenda.

The conference will be opened by Markus Ederer, State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office. Subsequently, Hekmat Karzai, Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, and Ambassador Sabine Sparwasser, the Special Representative of the Federal Government for Afghanistan and Pakistan, will speak.
